When in 2009, various rights groups including the True Face of Lagos and Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL) raised some allegations of impropriety against the Lagos State Government and demanded an account of how the government spent the taxpayers’ money, their thinking was that if the government was elected by the people, it should also be answerable to them. By late January 2010, with agitations growing stronger that the State Government respond to the allegations of corruption raised it by the various groups, the Lagos State House of Assembly decided to launch an investigation into some of the allegations. A wild applause greeted the establishment of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. But 10 years after, corruption is still soaring in the nation. Corruption is on the increase in public life. The list is endless-electoral crimes, civil service pension fund scam, police pension controversy, fuel subsidy fraud, House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee scandal. Critics have argued that it is relatively easier to prosecute and jail people who stole N2 million than to invite for questioning big fish, who allegedly made away with billions. Thus, the slow progression of the anti-crime battle has eroded public confidence. Continue reading “Is anti-corruption war on course?”

The decision of the federal government to purchase about 53 gold-plated iPhones 5S for the commemoration of the country’s 53rd independence anniversary in October has come under scathing attacks by the civil society.

The national publicity secretary of the pan-Yoruba socio cultural group, Afenifere, Mr Yinka Odumakin, faulted the move, saying that it adds no value to the deplorable condition of the ordinary Nigerians on the streets. This is just as the chairman, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL), Comrade Debo Adeniran, said the action was evidence of profligacy in the management of the country’s affairs where a large number of citizens live in abject poverty.
