The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders has flayed President Goodluck Jonathan for commending former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.

The President had described Alamieyeseigha as his political benefactor at a

meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party members in Bayelsa State

convened by Governor Seriake Dickson.

Executive Chairman of CACOL, Debo Adeniran, flayed

the President for glorifying corruption with impunity and without recourse to integrity.

He said, “It is appalling that the President who should be a better example

for the Nigerian populace to follow, could glorify corruption with such enthusiasm. The crops of people in the present government are so shameless and really do not give a damn about what the people think about their actions and utterances. What was the President insinuating? Does it mean he benefited from his so-called benefactor’s proceeds of corruption?”

Adeniran added that the President was encouraging corruption in

the country rather than fighting against it.

Also, CACOL called on the Federal Government to relieve the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido, of his job for allowing N2.1bn disappear without any trace from the vaults of the Nigeria Security Printing and Minting Company last week.

Adeniran said, “Mallam Sanusi and the management of Nigeria Security Printing and Minting Company should be sacked and prosecuted for allowing such rapacious corruption to take place under their nose. How could such huge money leave the vaults of the CBN without any trace? Or do the CBN and NSPMC have spirits in their workforce? It was definitely done in connivance with some staff members of the apex bank because it is not easy for an outsider to walk into the NSPMC and cart away such huge money when it was not an armed robbery attack.”

LAMENTABLE as it is, Nigeria’s anti-corruption war has continued to nose-dive at an alarming rate. Indeed, the country’s war against graft might soon collapse totally. This arises from the recent re-confirmation that the Federal Government is underfunding the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the main public agency saddled with the task of prosecuting the campaign. For a nation listed in the 139th position out of 176 countries ranked by Transparency International on its Corruption Perception Index (2012), the deliberate denial of funding to the EFCC is the wrong way to go.
