CACOL Flays Jonathan Over Comment On Security Challenges

The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL) has censured President Goodluck Jonathan over his statement that security challenges in some parts of the country could have been worse but for the prayers of Nigerians.
The President, who made this statement on Sunday at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Olive Tree Parish, Ikoyi, Lagos, observed that a content analysis of the mass media across the world showed that rarely do positive news come from any country and reiterated his belief that the violence being unleashed by Boko Haram members in the North-East represents Nigeria’s share of the negative news across the world. NADECO, CD, others remember Beko, list expectations from National Conference

THE Chairman, National Democratic Coalition, Retired Adm. Ndubusi Kanu, on Monday said that the forthcoming National Conference would take care of a lot of complaints of Nigerians.

Kanu spoke as several groups held rallies in honour of the late Dr Beko Ransome-Kuti at his memorial cenotaph at Anthony area of Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Beko, an activist and founder of Campaign for Democracy (CD), died on Feb. 10, 2006.

Nigeria faces questions over ‘missing’ oil money

LAGOS: Africa’s biggest oil producer Nigeria is facing questions about where billions of dollars in oil money is going, amid suspicions of fraud and it being syphoned off to fund election campaigns.
The issue has been rumbling on since September, when the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria accused the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation of withholding $49.8 billion in oil revenue.

CACOL advocates quick passage of NFIU Bill

The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL) has called for the quick passage of the bill to establish the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.

This came on the heel of the statement by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, who blamed the stealing of billions of naira from public coffers on the inefficiency of government’s financial management agencies.

Tambuwal, who spoke in Abuja on Monday at a public hearing on a Bill for an Act to Establish the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Agency organized by the House Committee on Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes, said that the proposed Nigerian Financial Intelligence Agency would fight the present dubious accounting procedures and help reduce the recklessness with which funds are being stolen. The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL) has faulted the nomination of the former Governor of Adamawa State, Mr. Boni Haruna in the ministerial list of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The President has sent a list of twelve ministerial nominees to the Senate for screening and confirmation. Speaking on behalf of the Coalition, its Executive Chairman, Debo Adeniran condemned the choice of Boni Haruna and averred that his nomination makes a mess of the anti-corruption war of the federal government. CACOL, SERAP carpet Jonathan over comments on corruption rating

Two major anti-corruption group, the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project on Thursday faulted President Goodluck Jonathan’s claim that “corruption is not the cause of all the problems confronting Africa.”
The two groups, in separate statements, said the comment credited to the President was a reflection of his lack of grasp of the realities about how corruption had deepened poverty and suffering among citizens.
Jonathan reportedly said on Wednesday at the ongoing World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that “corruption was not the cause of all the problems confronting Africa.”

Anti-gay law Nigeria: End of road for gay members?

 

Society – Few days ago, President Jonathan gave assent to the bill that criminalises same-sex relationships in the country putting paid to all the hullabaloo about gay legal rights in Nigeria. The activities now attract 14 years in prison. The law also prescribed a ten-year jail term for membership or encouragement of gay clubs and groups. Hitherto, members express their belief in the open with pride. To them, GAY means God Accepts You, God Adores You and God Affirms You; where DIVA means Divinely Inspired Victoriously Anointed.


Just as the National Assembly and indeed the President are receiving pats on the back from Nigerians for tightening laws against homosexuality, there are condemnations by the United Nations’ Ban Ki-moon; U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and British PM David Cameron. They consider the new law as an embarrassment to the European community. The United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki Moon in a statement released by his media aide opined that the development could fuel violence and risks obstructing an effective HIV/AIDS response in the country.
