At last, President Goodluck Jonathan has taken steps to live up to his words. Late in February, the President had vowed that there would be no cover up for those behind the alleged missing $20b earnings from the sale of crude oil which the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) allegedly did not remit into the Federation Account. The President who spoke during a Presidential Media Chat broadcast live on various radio and television stations across the country had made it clear that any missing funds from the NNPC treasury must be accounted for and that those found guilty would be exposed. President Jonathan had to give the assurance following allegations that he had suspended Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as Governor Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for exposing the alleged financial misdeeds of the NNPC. As CACOL, EFCC battle over anti corruption

By Chukwudi Nweje  –  Assistant Features Editor

The stage may be gradually setting for what may turn to be a mother of all legal battles. Two anti-graft outfits, one a government agency and the other, a group of civil society, community-based and other non-governmental organizations may lock horns soon over the former’s unwillingness or refusal to prosecute perceived acts of corruption.

The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL), a group of civil society, community-based and other non-governmental organizations with the objective of fighting corruption and corrupt persons by any means possible at all levels in Nigeria has said it is considering dragging Nigeria’s anti corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, (EFCC), to court and  obtaining an order of mandamus to compel the agency to investigate and prosecute former President Olusegun Obasanjo for alleged acts of corruption.

CACOL said it has written several petitions to the EFCC since when former President Obasanjo left office in May 2007 requesting the commission to in line with its establishing act investigate the former President whose lifestyle and extent of the properties, it says are not justified by his source of income. Although the group has written several petitions and follow ups, it said the EFCC has not acted on any of its letters to its office. Continue reading “As CACOL, EFCC battle over anti corruption”

Quest for men of good character in politics

By Chukwudi Nweje

According to the UN, a country’s success in achieving this standard is a key measure of its credibility and respect in the world. It said that good governance promotes equity, participation, pluralism, transparency, accountability and the rule of law, in a manner that is effective, efficient and enduring. These principles it says are translated into practice, in the form of free, fair and frequent elections, representative legislatures that make laws and provides oversight, and an independent judiciary to interpret those laws.

In Nigeria where politics is often regarded as a dirty game, it had been observed that these principles describe by the UN is everything that Nigeria is not. For instance, Nigeria is blessed with enormous human and material resources. Yet, the UN estimates that over 70 per cent of Nigerians live below the poverty level as these resources have not had any positive impact on the lives of the average Nigerian. In fact, economists have said that Nigeria suffered the ‘Resources Curse’ a situation whereby the vast resources had not translated to development.

This pitiable situation is blamed on the failure of leadership. In fact, late author and playwright, Chinualumogu Achebe, in his book ‘The Trouble with Nigeria’ 1983, observed that the trouble with Nigeria is simply and squarely a failure of leadership. Apparently worried by this, former President Olusegun Obasanjo is preaching a gospel of paradigm shift in politics. Continue reading “Quest for men of good character in politics”
