Considering its status as the former capital of Nigeria, the commercial nerve centre of the country and a major hub of economic activities in not just in the West African sub region, but the whole continent, it is therefore not surprising that Lagos State prides its self as the Centre of Excellence and a megacity in the making. Going by experts’ definition of a megacity as a metropolitan area with a total population in excess of ten million people, Lagos definitely qualifies as one. Although the last disputed population census says otherwise, Lagos is believed to be the most populous city in Nigeria. As a matter of fact, the Urban Land Institute (ULI), an authoritative and widely quoted source of objective information on urban planning, growth, and development in the world projects that Lagos is on the way to becoming one of the world’s five largest cities. It had been argued by enlightened analysts that the five Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano, Sule Lamido of Jigawa Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger, and Muratala Nyako of Adamawa States who have been traversing the country consulting with eminent Nigerians on how to “save the country’s nascent democracy,” may have been testing the grounds ahead of the 2015 general elections. Unfolding developments in the land seem to prove those observers right. The governors under the aegis of ‘Save Democracy’ initiative in the last two months, had consulted with former Military Heads of State, Generals Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsalami Abubakar; former Presidents Shehu Shagari and Olusegun Obasanjo, among other prominent Nigerians. Although the political crises in Rivers State and the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) appear to have subsided, the actions of five Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors- Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano, Sule Lamido of Jigawa Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger and Murtala Nyako of Adamawa States who went on solidarity visit to Governor Rotimi Amaechi in the heat of the altercations has not.
The governors under the aegis of ‘Save Democracy’ initiative have been touring some parts of the country in the last few months, consulting with prominent Nigerians on as they put it, ‘the state of the nation’. They had in that instance, met with former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, who called them “true patriots” for initiating peace moves to end the crisis of confidence in Rivers State and the nation in general. They also interacted with former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Second Republic President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari among other prominent Nigerians both within and outside political circles. Ganiyat Fawehinmi, wife of Gani Fawehinmi, the late human right activist has backed the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of University, ASUU, declaring, “it is very sad that the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan-led government believes that the best way to service the education industry is to deprive ASUU of its demands.”
Fawehinmi made the declaration at the 6th annual general convention of Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL, in Ikeja, Lagos, on Wednesday. President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is an “outright failure” and should be defeated in the 2015 election, Ganiyat Fawehinmi said in a statement on Wednesday as she assessed the country’s challenges.
“Our present Federal Government led by Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is an outright failure and we pray that by 2015, he will not return,” said Ganiyat, wife of the late Senior Advocate of Nigeria and radical lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi.

The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL, has condemned in strong term the N39 billion spent on the construction of the cable bridge at Lekki, in Lagos, saying it was “an absurd of the highest order” and a drain on the tax payers’ money.
