BARELY 24 hours after the media release of a pungent letter to President Goodluck Jonathan, former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, joined Jonathan for breakfast in Nairobi, Kenya, on Thursday.

Jonathan was in the country as guest of President Uhuru Kenyatta, where he joined other African leaders at the 50th Independence anniversary celebration of the East African country.
Obasanjo’s visit to Jonathan in his Intercontinental Hotel, Nairobi, where they had a private breakfast together, came as a surprise, as his letter, first published in the media on Wednesday, had elicited response from the presidency.

Obasanjo left Jonathan after the breakfast, but it was not clear whether they discussed the letter or the issues contained therein.

In the letter, which was first published on Premium Times, an online medium, on Wednesday, Obasanjo had raised numerous allegation against the president, who he accused of working towards another term in office, even when he had undertaken to run for one term. Nigerian activists and anti-corruption crusaders on Monday inspected some facilities in Lagos, western Nigeria, to draw attention to corruption in the state.

The activists, under the umbrella of Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL, said the alarming official corruption and propaganda are threatening the future of Lagos.

The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL) has told the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, that he must also blame Nigerian legislators for the pervasive corruption in the country.

On Monday, Tambuwal stated publicly that the body language of President Goodluck Jonathan did not indicate that he has the political will to fight corruption in the country.  He decried President Jonathan’s penchant for setting up committees to probe corruption allegations and what he termed “the culture of undue secrecy surrounding the operation of government.”

Reacting to that statement, CACOL’s Comrade Debo Adeniran described the Speaker’s position as a “shameless statement from an inactive control system,” attributing the alarming upswing of corruption in the country to the legislative arm of the government as well. The Speaker also decried President Jonathan’s penchant for setting up committees to probe corruption allegations and what he termed, “the culture of undue secrecy surrounding the operation of government.” Reacting to this statement, CACOL chairman, Comrade Debo Adeniran censured the Speaker, over his comment that President Jonathan has been encouraging corruption in the country and attributed the alarming rate of corruption proliferation in the country to, not only the executive, but also the legislative arm of the government. As the annual World Anti-Corruption Day was marked yesterday globally, the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL, urged President Goodluck Jonathan to step-up fight against corruption through the operation and legal enhancement of the various anti-corruption agencies in the country, saying that motivation would help combat the corruption epidemic ravaging the society.

Speaking during anti-corruption tour organised by CACOL in Lagos yesterday to mark the World Anti-Corruption Day, CACOL executive chairman, Comrade Debo Adeniran, bemoaned the alarming state of corruption in the country, urging anti-graft and security agencies to expedite actions on the allegations of official corruption levelled against many state actors, be it at federal, state and local government level. The   All Progressives Congress, the Campaign for Democracy, the  Human Rights Agenda Network  and a former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu,  on Tuesday  told President Goodluck Jonathan  to see  the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu  Tambuwal’s criticism of  his administration’s anti-graft war as a wake-up call.

They said the criticism should not be dismissed with a wave of the hand  because  it came from the speaker, who is not only a Peoples Democratic Party member like Jonathan, but  the nation’s number four citizen.

Tambuwal had at an event organised by the Nigerian Bar Association to mark the 2013 International Anti-Corruption Day in Abuja on Monday , said the President’s body language did not show he had the political will to stem graft in the country. The alleged assassination attempt on Nigeria’s embattled Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, is a manufactured lie meant to divert attention from the corruption scandal involving her, Nigerians said on Tuesday.

The minister had, on Monday evening, reported to the police that her car came under gunfire by unknown persons at Maitama area of Abuja on Friday at 10.30 p.m.

But Nigerians, who spoke on the alleged assassination attempt doubted the story, describing it as “cooked up” and an attempt to divert attention from the scandal involving her in the purchase of two BMW cars at the hefty sum of N255 million.

“Nigerians are very wise and no one believes her story. No one had tried to kill her in the past, why is it now that she is under investigation for atrocities she has committed that someone would shoot at her car?” queried Mohammed Tukur, a vocal aviation stakeholder and member of the Airlines Operators of Nigeria.
